Bill Nix

Bill NixBill Nix is a published, award winning Banjoist in the Old-Time tradition. Raised in a musical family, he is a third generation musician. He started with the key-board at age 8, Guitar at 12 and Banjo at 15. In the late 1950’s, while in High School and living with different relatives, he played in several “garage” bands in the deep South as well as the West Coast.

Influenced by and “sitting” in with “Hillbilly” musicians at Grange Hall dances and community gatherings, he was steeped in the traditional string- band sounds of a by-gone era. In the late 1960’s, after serving in the military, Bill availed himself of lessons from the likes of Mike Seeger, Homer Fish and as many other old time and country pickers as he could find.

While in college, Bill again found himself playing in string bands, doing some teaching, Coffee House picking and developing his personal style of presentation and performance. Professional responsibilities following graduate study relegated Bill and his music to being the occasional “pick-up musician” when friends and bands would pass through.  By this time, he had been through the musical periods of Rock and Roll, Blues, Folk, and old Country, but the mountain music of his youth had stayed with him.

After retirement and with over 60 years of musical experience, Bill has come out of hiding and is again playing and performing his beloved music with the “HomeGrown OldTime” string band.
